Joy Prom | Help Us Throw a Prom for those with Different Abilities

Joy Prom Winston-Salem is a full-scale, annual prom for the special needs individuals in our community. Established in 2015, we welcome guests ages 16+, with any physical, developmental, or intellectual "different ability!"

We need about 450 volunteers to make the night successful in all kinds of roles!

Hosts & Hostesses (15 years+) - Hosts guide the guests to the different activities of the evening; remains with the guest at each activity and never leaves the guest alone. Hosts ensures the guest is enjoying the activities of the guest choice. Host remains with the guest until the guest is reunited with their parent/caretaker at the end of the evening.

Shoe Shiners (Men) - Team of 4 Men shine male guests shoes from 6:45 pm - 9:30 PM. 

Quiet Room Volunteers - Host the Quiet Room for any guest who needs a quiet place to rest. Welcome and make guests feel comfortable. Bring a book or other entertainment as there can be periods of time when no-one is in the quiet room. There is a possibility that no-one visits the room but if one our guests would need this area the volunteer position is extremely important.

Photo Booth - Assist photographers with all needs related to photo booth. Ensure guests are lined up single file allowing for a faster photo booth experience.

Medical Team - The Joy Prom Medical Team members staff a medical room and circulate throughout the venue. The medical room provides a place where host/hostesses can take guests to be evaluated if needed. One staff member remains in the medical room, while other medical volunteers circulate all Joy Prom areas. Host/Hostesses and guests will be able to see medical team members walking around in case of an emergency situation. Medical team members keep in touch via text throughout the evening. In the past, the team has mainly helped with minor conditions such as guests with known seizure disorders during seizures; dehydration/exhaustion (checking blood pressure giving water/ reassurance for such guests)l; and vague symptoms and feeling weak. EMS will be called for serious health concerns, however that has never happened. A team of 6. Nurses, MD’s PA's, NPs, EMT's, medical interns/residents, medical students, nursing students or PA students

Hall Monitors (25 years+) - Welcome guests and monitor assigned area to ensure guests and volunteers have directions to the Joy Prom area of interest. Ensure guests and volunteers aren't entering areas of the church not being used by Joy Prom.

Bingo Volunteers - Greet guests when enter the Bingo Room and help locate a vacant seat. Provide Bingo supplies to the guest during games. Give out prizes to the winners. Encourage and cheer for all guests.

Food Servers (18 years+), Food Prep, Dining Room Clean Up
