Senior Academy Program Mentor
Helping to ensure that high school students graduate with the critical skills they need to enter the workforce or to pursue additional education and training is the goal of the Senior Academy Program. We have partnered with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools since 2008 to successfully help improve the graduation rate. Targeted 12th grade students who are in jeopardy of dropping out of school are identified by their guidance counselors and invited to participate. With mentor support, these participating students have achieved a 93-98% graduation rate!
Mentors and students work together to set short-term goals for discipline/behavior, attendance, and academic progress. Students are recognized for achieving goals through an organized incentive plan that includes gift certificates and other rewards. An individualized career plan is developed for each student based on their career assessment tool results. Mentors will help their students make college and/or career connections. Students also have a chance to experience success through applied learning. Strategic field trips, resume writing, mock job interviews, choosing appropriate attire, and tips on completing job applications are other activities the program helps to promote. Schools served include: Carver, East Forsyth, Glenn, North Forsyth, Parkland and Reynolds High Schools.
